Florida Highway Patrol Beefs up Patrols and DUI Checkpoints
According to reports, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving has become one of the biggest nights of the year for people to celebrate and ring in the holiday season by going out and drinking alcohol. It is becoming such a tradition that the day is now second only to New Year's Eve in alcoholic consumption. In South Florida, this day is so well-known by bar owners and law enforcement officials that they refer to it as "Blackout Wednesday". In addition, because many people drink into the early morning hours on Thanksgiving Day, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) states that Thanksgiving has now emerged as one of the most dangerous days for fatal drunk driving accidents.
In an effort to curb such accidents and lower the number of DUIs over the entire holiday season, the Florida Highway Patrol began beefing up its drunk driving unit and adding DUI checkpoints as of the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Since driving under the influence in a crime in Ft. Lauderdale and the entire state of Florida, anyone arrested for DUI could be facing misdemeanor or felony charges. This does not mean, however, that as the victim of a DUI, you will automatically receive any compensation for injuries or damages you sustained in the accident.
